OVERVIEW

Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?

It’s a film directed by Martin Scorsese, one of the greatest living American directors, shot by Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

Reports of UFOs visiting Earth have steadily moved from the fringes of culture to the mainstream, appearing on the front page of the New York Times and inspiring testimony in front of the US Congress. Despite this, there is very little public engagement with the story.

Martin Scorsese is an extremely well-known American film director, famous for his extensive knowledge of cinematic history.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

We open in a 1950s living room, where a young Martin Scorsese is watching a science fiction movie about UFOs. We then fast forward through reports of UFO sightings over the following years, arriving at present day. In the skies above New York, Paris, Tokyo and rural Texas, extraterrestrials are desperately trying to get humanity’s attention, but everyone is heads down in their laptops and phones, distracted by clickbait content and social media. Finally, the frustrated aliens understand what they need to break through: a Squarespace website. As the website appears on screens around the world, people begin to gaze up in wonder. In the final scene, we see Martin Scorsese again, now eighty years old, watching the same science fiction movie on a tablet while his car sits in traffic. The alien website glitches onscreen, interrupting the movie, and he leans out the window to see UFOs overhead.

Background:

In today’s digitally focused world, it’s not real if it’s not on the internet, which means a beautifully designed website can be the most powerful tool to get your message noticed. Our brief was to demonstrate that fact on and around the Super Bowl in order to drive Squarespace brand awareness.
