CampaignDescription
The idea was drawn from the fact that nowadays, artists and designers are referring to the online platform to buy fonts. Therefore, these was not a more convenient way to do it other than place six different typefaces for free on a website where every designer in the world can access it, download and use the fonts.
Execution
Currently, the micro site serves as the main hub for artists and designers to download the six typefaces as well as gain insight about the project and the team behind it.
There is an expansion plan for the project to include more fonts. Thus, the portal serves as a sustainable hub where this project can witness the development of more font.
Outcome
Within 2 days of the campaign launch, we had received positive feedback from artists who were asking about the website launch date to start downloading the fonts and creating designs.
The website was recently launched, and with the support of the campaign promotional material as well as the art influencers' social media, layers of people downloaded and used the fonts; starting with artists and art enthusiasts leading on to those who are simply passionate about downtown.
Art pieces were developed and covered on different social media assets from Facebook to Instagram by using the hashtag #KhotoutWestElBalad.
The fonts were used in different art pieces, from nostalgia posters including an old famous dancer with her name written in one of the fonts to a french Artist who used the typefaces for his book cover.
Relevancy
In the digital fast-pace age we live in today, art forms requiring handcrafting like typography can easily fade away. The old signage of Downtown are canvases that have preserved old writings when everything was hand-wrought. As these signs start to decay, so the art carried along.
To preserve this art form, we had to make it relevant by adapting it to today’s usage.
This lead to the development of a micro site, a hub where this timeless craft can forever survive in its new digitized form.
Synopsis
This project recreates these fonts in a contemporary setting, develop them into complete alphabet and makes them available for free to be used by today’s artists, businesses and retailers through a microsite. By doing so, these typefaces can continue to exist and spread.
