OVERVIEW

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

The general public often thinks of artificial intelligence in a fictional sense without realizing it is already impacting the loans they apply for, the stock market they trade in, and the people they choose to go on dates with. Because this technology is so ingrained in our lives, we must ask, “How do we ensure it does more good than harm?”

The film, Moral Code, features the opinions of experts in the field of artificial intelligence who identify their concerns with the technology’s future. In their commentary throughout the video, the experts address themes like wealth disparity, racist A.I., and a lack of transparency.

The interviewees come from varying backgrounds, from an AI entrepreneur to philosophy professor to Pulitzer-winning technology journalist. While they each bring their personal expertise to the conversation, they all share the core thesis of the video—we must address concerns with A.I. before it's too late.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.

At a time when many are recklessly celebrating the promises of AI, we decided to take a step back. Rather than simply make a film answering the question "what is AI?" or create a hype video on AI's potential, we wanted to go deeper - to ask the necessary ethical questions we must address today. How do we enable AI to reach its potential? How do we prevent bias from seeping into the data? By tackling these questions, the hope was to generate honest conversation about how to most effectively and safely introduce Artificial Intelligence.
