OVERVIEW

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

In the four-minute film, Budweiser surprises retiring NBA star Dwyane Wade with jersey swaps from five people he’s most impacted off the court. Wade stands at centercourt as these five people, one by one, come forward to tell Wade about how he’s changed their life. Each new story becomes more emotional and more personal for Wade, culminating with his own mother surprising him. The video ends as each person presents Wade with a jersey to swap. And while not everyone has an actual jersey, they all bring something emblematic of Wade’s impact. His mother, for instance, gives the church robe from her first service as a pastor at the church he bought for her when she got out of prison. We leave Wade stunned and show him how his legacy is much bigger than basketball.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Dwyane Wade is a guard for the Miami Heat and one of the greatest basketball players of his generation. He is a 3-time NBA champion, a 13-time All Star, and an Olympic gold medalist. After 16 seasons in the NBA, he announced he was retiring from basketball at the end of the 2018-2019 NBA season. Throughout his final season, he began swapping jerseys with the NBA players who had defined his career in basketball. The jersey swap is a tradition that originated in soccer where players literally exchange their game-worn jerseys after matches as a sign of mutual respect and admiration. Wade was the first player to bring this ritual to the NBA.
