OVERVIEW

BriefExplanation

SIO owns more than 5,000 apartments reserved for students in Oslo. The apartments vary in size and price, and are pretty basic, but are cheaper than regular apartments. In August, at the beginning of every student year, the apartments are filled up quickly, so students never think of vacancies during the winter.

More than 1,000 apartments were standing empty in the winter of 2003. Our task was to fill them up.

CampaignDescription

To make students aware of the availability, we left 3,000 keychains around on the campuses of the University of Oslo and the city's colleges. They consisted of a key and a little note that said 'Are you a student and looking for a new place to live? Now you've got a key, call us to get an apartment.' The keys looked like someone dropped them, so people quickly picked them up.

Outcome

The SIO office got hundreds of keychains returned by people who thought they'd lost them, some expecting a reward. Their switchboard was flooded by calls. Local television and radio got in touch, thinking there was a scandal where SIO had lost the keys to 3,000 apartments. The key stunt was the talk of the campuses for weeks. At the end of March, there was not a single apartment available.
