OVERVIEW

Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?

Craft is at the heart of this film- a seamlessly charming work that effectively executes the idea in a way that feels warm, refreshing and grounded.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

The brand campaign was Volkswagen’s first in seven years and introduces a new and enduring brand platform for the automotive company, ‘Let’s go for a drive.’

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The film follows a lighthouse keeper with little reason to drive his car around the small island. Only the mail delivery gives him the opportunity to get behind the wheel of his Volkswagen and experience the joy of driving.

Background:

The aim of the work was to instil the film with the charm of the idea itself, that even if you don’t “need” to drive, a drive could be exactly what you need. From a craft perspective the work created genuine warmth and authenticity, in what could have potentially been a very bleak view of a cold lighthouse on the precipice of the southern ocean.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the direction. Do not name the director.

The Director sought to ground the humor of the work in a cinematic, yet authentic reality. The camera documenting each scene simply and elegantly, without resorting to gimmicks, tricks or novelty. The timeless quality of the direction, draws you in and allows for the idea to be fully and effectively illuminated.
