Overview

Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?

Mama's Eyes digs into Mette's roots and explores her growth into the performer, dancer and musician she is today. This is represented on screen through the seamless match/inter- cutting Editing between Mette's prowess in the visually striking performances of the video and the stock, found and archive footage of nature, old Hollywood dance films, protests and Mette's childhood. The themes of universal human experience that are explored in the video by Mette, Camille Summers-Valli and the whole team the films relevance for Film Craft couldn't be stronger.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

The main cultural context for Mama's Eyes are the themes touched on and explored; mothering, womanhood, personal growth, self discovery. As promo news puts it "the video intercuts culturally referential footage of growth, mothering, justice, and celebration, growing increasingly more personal as the concept continues." In this context, the combination of culturally significant archival footage alongside intimate moments from Mette's own life, brings to light the similarities of both universal and personal challenges.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

Mama's Eyes is a music video for Mette's song of the same name. The video itself illustrates Mette dancing through a range of environments that are both real and abstracted, intercut home videos of Mette as a child sit alongside stock footage ranging from cartoons, to animals, old films, building falling down, dancers and so on.

The video centres around Mette's upbringing, as Mette puts it; "It’s a window into my coming of age story – how I’ve found music, dance, and performance to be an outlet of self expression and a divine sense of belonging. The richness of this visual is in its abstraction of the song’s theme of 'mothering'."

Background:

The situation was to create a music video for Mette's new song 'Mama's Eyes' with a strong perspective and intention form both the artist and our director, Camille Summers-Valli.

The main brief of the video was to articulate Mette's past present and future, with imagery both referencing and contrasting the themes of the song, mothering, childhood and womanhood. A challenge of the edit was to use a combination of found and present day shot footage of Mette along with a huge array of stock footage to illustrate the various impacts and upbringing of her life whilst articulating the influences and internal characteristics of Mette.

The solution was to seize on the idea of creating a fluid narrative between past present and future Mette, who she was, who she is, who she wants to be.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the edit. Do not name the editor.

The combination of family footage and present day Mette made these moments of reflection and understanding of Mette's character whilst also using stock footage to illustrate the more nostalgic and internal sides of Mette. Intercutting a vast range of stock footage with the artistry of Mette's choreography was key to the foundation of the edit in order to clearly illustrate not only Mette's rhythm in dance and life, but also her internal rhythm.
