OVERVIEW

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

The Ariston Comfort Challenge: a mission to bring comfort to those who gave up theirs for the health of our planet. It is the epic story of the construction of a 'comfort zone' in one of the coldest places in the world, Disko island, Greenland, which implied the design of the building material and its subsequent transport via aircrafts, icebreakers, dogsleds before the final installation. A 58-square-metre housing module heated by one of the most sustainable boilers ever made, the comfort zone was used to shelter researchers coming from all over the world to study the climate changes that are endangering the existence of phytoplankton, the set of micro-organisms living in the oceans, responsible for producing 50% of the world's oxygen. This is why their research is of vital importance.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Disko Island, Greenland is one of the most extreme and coldest places in the world. This is also why it retains an impressive amount of useful data for scientists to study the effects of climate change. In the colder months, however, research is forced to stop due to weather conditions, thus slowing down a project which is key for our future. Transporting a 58-square-metre shelter in such conditions was a remarkable feat of endurance, which required over 18 months of work and an endless list of means of transport, including animal-driven ones. For this reason, the involvement of the whole local community and the University of Copenhagen was key to the success of the operation. In particular, we established a partnership with the University, gifting the shelter to them after its completion.

The film alternates different narrative threads. However, it was especially important to highlight the epic and extreme character of the entire mission, playing with the contrasts between the beauty and brutality of Greenland, which provided the background to the story. We divided the story into 6 main narrative threads. For each of them, we composed an original musical theme, with different variations of intensity. Inspiration came from different sources: from the Italian Western films by Sergio Leone from the 70s to the folk tradition of the Inuit, a small population native of the Arctic. For the realization, we involved local artists as well as Greenlandic bands, also collaborating with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra.
