Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

This heart-warming film captures a Dad, whose childhood dream of playing drums is awoken when he sees the drumkit his daughter circled in the Argos catalogue. To his surprise that very drumkit magically appears from under the table. Dad begins to play as the kitchen transforms into his own private gig, with bulbs beaming in the oven and stage smoke pouring from the fridge. Simple Minds’ 80s classic ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ plays on the TV and he drums along as his kitchen begins to transform into a stage. Woken by Dad goofing around, his daughter comes down the stairs to see what’s going on. Surprised that dad too wanted to drum, they magically begin to jam together and end up playing the gig of a lifetime, complete with a crowd surfing bear.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

Argos is a leading British omnichannel retailer and much-loved brand which sells everything from homewares and furniture, to tech and toys. Founded in the 1970s, it’s a national treasure, shopped at by 60% of the UK. Every Christmas, Argos releases a catalogue, and for many families throughout the UK, the release of the Argos catalogue marks the start of Christmas. Parents and children alike love flicking through it and circling what they dream of this year. This tradition and nostalgia is uniquely ours to own, so we capitalised on it by renaming the catalogue ‘The Book of Dreams’. We created a film that bought the excitement, anticipation and imagination ‘The Book of Dreams’ evokes to life in a way that families up and down the UK can relate to.

Tell the jury about the casting process.

For our story we looked for a Dad and Daughter. Musician actors that could develop a special bond that would travel through the screen. Each had to be one “hell of a drummer” and exude character and charisma. Physical acting, great faces and expressions and impeccable timing for physical comedy were all requirements, not just a natural sense of rhythm. She would have an appealing quirkiness and twinkle in her eye that made her likeable and fun to watch. He would convey warmth, humour, emotion and energy with his performance. The dream team. Both Nandi Bushell and Omar Abidi fit the brief to a tee. Not only are they both extremely talented musicians and actors, they also had an instant chemistry and clearly felt at ease with each other throughout the whole process.
