Description
The Apollo 11 lunar landing was the realisation of JFK's grand vision to land a man on the moon. To honor the 40th anniversary of the landing we recreated the mission exactly 40 years after it happened in a real-time online film.
At precisely 9:32 AM on July 16, 2009, Apollo 11 took off again at wechoosethemoon.org. 3D animation was used to depict the journey, and users were able to rotate and observe the spacecraft from multiple angles as it traveled, giving the audience perspectives never before possible.Throughout the four-day trip, users could access galleries containing archival photos and videos that related to the current stage of the journey. Over 450 such items from NASA and the JFK Library were dispersed throughout the film, giving the modern visuals historical context.102 hours of continuous live mission audio were replayed throughout, and we used Twitter to rebroadcast 650 of the most interesting pieces of conversation exactly 40 years after they were said. This conversation appeared in real-time within the film presentation for users to review. The audience could also use built-in tools to see the distance, speed and weight of the spacecraft. Finally, after landing, viewers could fill out and download a certificate indicating they watched the mission, interacted with the view and galleries and plan to visit the JFK Presidential Library.During the four-day event, 1.25 million people watched and interacted with the mission to the moon, and media coverage of the event generated 160 million media impressions worldwide. Tweets from the 30,000 Twitter followers reached an additional 1 million people. After the landing on July 20, the live film converted to a self-guided tour where visitors could interact with the mission, audio, photos and videos at their own pace.
