OVERVIEW

Background

The aim is to create a new experience that people can enjoy it with the NTT’s state-of-the-art ICT technology. Also it is played a lot of people in the city. NTT's R&D department wanted a lot of people to know the state-of-the-art ICT technology that the department developed. Therefore, the digital sport that is the technology incorporated has been introduced. By doing so, people, experienced the digital-sports, could understand the outline of the technology.

Idea

We’ve develop the state-of-art digital experience with Deep Learning Runtime Optimization Technology. User can ride the wave with the surfing board in the centre of Tokyo, Shibuya. The bigness of waves are depended on how many people are crossing the road. If there are a lot of people crossing, the movement of the boards sway a lot as well.

The main aim of the project is to push an attractiveness of cutting edge sport-technology for 2020 and branding the company who has the technology.

We focused on the characteristics of the crowded data of the crossing that constantly change like waves in nature and show the movement of each moment.

By converting human flow data into digital waves by analysis technology and converting it into the experience of surfing, We thought that its possible to propose a new style of urban sports that is not merely copy of natural phenomenon.

Strategy

The target data was collected by analysing real-time images of Shibuya-crossing owned by Shibuya Television. We interpreted the traffic flow data at the Shibuya crossing as "waves" in the city. And then?we analysed the data and found the characteristic of pedestrians such as each person's movement, age, and gender. Its were the elements for creating the digital wave. On the other words, the bigness of the waves are decided by ratio of man/women, average age and how many people and are crossing. We could ride the wave with surfboard-type device.

Execution

Shibuya Mark City on the 1st floor near Shibuya Scramble intersection from 9/10 to 9/17, the holding period of "Social Innovation week 2018" where cutting-edge content is developed here and there in the city And released our products to the general public for free between 10 and 18 o'clock.

For the experience person, while the signal at the scramble intersection turns red and the surfboard is stationary, the experience person gets on the board under the guidance of a staff.

When the signal at the intersection turns blue, have them experience the installation.

When the light turns red and the surfboard stops moving, the experience is over. The maximum number of people per experience was three.

The basic design idea came from the intersection. I used the white line, recalling the intersection, and red, blue, and yellow colors for the graphic. Thus, three color is the keywords for the grand design and creatives. In order to stand out with vivid colors like that so that we can color the chaotic Shibuya city.

Outcome

As a result, 2436 people experienced it and reached over 43,000 people. And on SNS, there were a lot of postvreferring to the surprise and novelty of the experience of "surfing in the city"
