OVERVIEW

Background

Hoop Cities is a content series that explores the integral role basketball plays in the life of European cities. It demonstrates the impact it has in each community and culture.

Every episode showcases a new city, introduces their NBA players, fans and passion for the game, seeking to reignite the latent passion many people have for the sport through the impact the game has on the culture of the city. Giving context to sport outside of the usual US coverage.

Creatively, our task was to create a visual world for the series that encapsulates the love that NBA has for Europe and how it is present and supports each of the cities with basketball.

Idea

We created an overarching strategy, creative concept and master asset toolkit for the Hoop Cities in Europe. Encapsulating how the NBA inspires and connects with people through the power of basketball. We explored 8 different cities through the lens of basketball, the court was our aperture. We used this device to frame the action and reveal the cultural icons that make each city so important to the history of basketball. We captured the energy and diversity of the individual cities through energizing and dynamic imagery and motion, framing these moments and allowing us to transition and highlight all the relevant action.

Execution

In order to showcase the myriad content included in the docuseries, we created the Hoop Cities court frame; a dynamic system able to flex to different cities and cultures, while visually underlining their connection through basketball. The frame has a unique kinetic quality, seamlessly transitioning through perspectives - hopefully capturing the unifying power that the NBA has across Europe.
