Description

Set at an amusement park, a woman is recounting how she used to be preoccupied with her UC. As she tells us her story, we experience what it feels like to be her, constantly worried about having her next attack.

Through CGI, adept acting, rigging and camera techniques, the world around her freezes, and the camera becomes her mind’s eye as we follow it through a series of scenes that are very scary for her–a line at a bathroom, foods that are potential triggers, crowds that may cause her stress.

Eventually, she talks about how she found HUMIRA, and joins the world in real time. Finally, she can focus on her life rather than worrying about her next flare. This allows her to enjoy her friends at the pier, truly engaged in the moment.

Execution

We completely re-imagined an ocean pier with set design and CGI, and created a bustling amusement park full of colorful activity. When our character recounts her story, all these added details stopping at once communicate her world has also stopped. For realism, 60-70% was shot in camera---a skateboarder frozen in a jump, a girl hugging her boyfriend, frozen in midair. We used actors who could freeze on cue, posed them on rigs, and had our star talk to a technodolly while moving through the scene and around objects that would be later added in post.

In postproduction, rigs were removed and details were added--the juggler’s hands and the pins he’s juggling, pigeons being fed then taking off, the amusement park ride stopping then starting again, mustard being squeezed onto a hot dog, popcorn being spilled into the air, flags waving, and balloons rising making 15 seconds of footage infinitely memorable.
