ClientBriefOrObjective
The media budget of the International Model-Makers Fair in Vienna is like their exhibits - very, very small. In order to increase online ticket sales via the Fair’s website, we created one of the most successful guerilla actions of the year.
Execution
Felix Baumgartners stratos jump took place exactly two weeks before the opening of the Model-Makers Fair in Vienna. We used the media hype for Felix‘s jump to stage our version, with perfect timing for the opening and reached the right target groups as well.
Our film not only shows the successful jump, but also how much fun and joy the building and playing with a model can be. Watching alone makes one want to join and activates people to want to go to the fair even more.
Implementation
We decided to hijack the official Red Bull Stratos project and recreate this record-breaking jump for ourselves. 8 hours before the official jump started, our fearless astronaut took his first step into the unknown – however, in the scale of 1:350.
The documention about our incredible stunt was then launched on YouTube with a link to the Model-Makers Fair website.
Outcome
Within the first week we had more than 8 million views on YouTube and generated free media coverage worth millions.
Even Felix Baumgartner himself described our viral film as “mind-blowing” on his Facebook page.
The YouTube link generated so much traffic that the Fair’s server broke down. However, the Fair still achieved its most successful online ticket sales to date and set a new visitors record, topping the previous year’s record by a further 6%.
The production costs for the film were a total of EUR 1.200, more than half of the costs being spent on the helium.
