OVERVIEW

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

“ME after ME RUNWAY” is a world’s first virtual fashion fitting experience that exact avatar of yourself walk on runway with numerous stylings. With the latest 3D avatar scanning and simulation technology, we reformed the former fashion industry value chain (prototyping, manufacturing, and purchasing phase) where "Fashion Loss" has been an issue. It provides an opportunity for anyone to have an avatar that looks exactly like themselves and to encounter a new sense of themselves through entertaining, simultaneous multiple clothing fitting experience. We aim to create a "SUSTAINABLE FASIHON EXPERIENCE" that combines transformation of the fashion industry.

Background

The fashion industry has been asked to evolve its commerce experience most during the COVID-19 pandemic. In traditional e-commerce, it took a lot of work to confirm size and fit. On the other hand, in actual fitting rooms, customers complained that the number of clothes they could wear at one time was limited, and it was difficult to objectively check their figures. A new experience that solves the bottleneck of both digital and real-life experiences of fashion was sought by both apparel brands and consumers. Furthermore, the fashion industry is now the world's second most environmentally polluting industry. The primal concern is "Fashion Loss" due to mass production and disposal. 85% of produced clothes end up in landfills now. Apparel brands want to provide more "suitability" smartly, and consumers want to experience more excitement of encountering "suitability."

Describe the idea

“ME after ME Runway” allows anyone to own their 3D avatar easily with technology that generates accurate and realistic avatars in just 20 seconds, like a photo-booth. Then, one’s avatars, wearing six different outfits, will walk down the runway one after one, like in a fashion show. This system is a new fashion experience that breaks through the constraints of the fitting room by allowing people to compare different ‘themselves’ with each other, observe from 360°, try on many outfits at the same time, and try on clothes they would not dare to wear in real life. We also broken through the limitations of e-commerce problems where you can find clothes that suit you better online. It is envisioned to expand into pre-marketing and custom-made. It is intended to be an online merge with offline solution across stores and mobile.

What were the key dates in the development process?

・Releasing the prototype -December, 2021

・Holding an exclusive demonstration session among press and clients -February, 2022

・Numerous media exposure nationwide -March, April, 2022

・Holding a workshop with apparel brand such as Uniqlo to discover the business possibilities by collaboration – Since March, 2022

・Pop-up demonstration event in public with Aeon Mall, the Japanese largest mall developer -March, 2023

We have been conducting Proof Of Concept demonstrations, and Proof Of Business is under progress.

Describe the innovation / technology

By utilizing 3D avatars created through ultra-high-speed 3D scanning, it provides a simultaneous multiple clothing fitting experience, in which "a number of one's avatars show up one after one like a fashion show". By creating an opportunity to try on clothes that you had previously been hesitant or embarrassed to, and by enabling you to objectively observe your own figure in "ME after ME RUNWAY", we have broken through the limitations of both fitting room and e-commerce to create a new fashion commerce experience where you can find clothes which suit you better than ever before.

① Ultra-High-Speed Scanning: Ultra-High-speed avatar generating system with 0.2 secs. For capturing, data processing within 20 secs.

② Body Estimation: High-precision scanning technology with ±5mm accuracy. In addition, body size can be estimated while the user is clothed. This implemented stress-free 3D avatar-making with no location and phycological restrictions.

③ Immediate Auto-Fitting: Simulates the fit of clothes by the avatar's movements. Enables objective fitting check of myself walking.

There have been virtual fitting concepts since a few years ago. Still, this technology is highly functional to blend in daily user experiences.

Describe the expectations / outcome

The trial session recorded a high level of satisfaction from the customer.

・Experience Satisfaction: 90%

・People who found attractive about this service: 98%

・Pleased with suitability: 84%

・Purchase intention after the experience: 78%

After the prototype launch, multiple medias such as NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corporation), Nikkei (Japan Economic Times) etc. reported it as a cutting-edge fashion experience nationwide.

Furthermore, by introducing this solution into each phase of the fashion value chain, we aim to reduce prototype disposal, overproduction, and size mismatches. Thereby reducing environmental impact. Once users generate their 3D avatars, they can carry their own avatars on mobile phones. It makes consumers use that avatar for 3D fitting anytime and anywhere. We are implementing the service expansion as online merges with offline solutions to shopping malls and retail stores. Also, the plan to leverage the precise body size capturing technology to custom-made clothing service is undergoing for the future.
