HEINZ REMIX is the first customizable digital dispenser that allows consumers to create 200+ sauce combinations, responding to consumers across the globe looking for flavor personalization and customization; and to restaurant operators looking to build brand differentiation with unique sauces for their consumers. We’re revolutionizing how foodservice operators interact with brands and how consumers experience their food away from home. HEINZ REMIX is a real-time insights engine and new business model enabler that will help Kraft Heinz understand and respond to consumer flavor preferences, while enabling a leaner supply chain by providing real-time sauce consumption and replenishment needs to operators.

For years, HEINZ lovers have shown off their irrational love for the brand by creating new and unique condiment concoctions out of their favorite HEINZ offerings. Current trends show that consumers across the globe are looking for more personalization and accessible ways to explore new flavors, especially with a desire for more nuanced, elevated, unique, and spicier options.

HEINZ has been always at the center of creating new flavors and ways for consumers to experience and experiment with their favorite HEINZ condiments. Now, the HEINZ REMIX machine changes the game for consumers and foodservice operators. HEINZ REMIX gives consumers 200+ ways to mix their favorite sauces, addressing the growing need for personalization and enabling consumers to create their own taste identities. Furthermore, HEINZ REMIX is disrupting consumer condiment consumption behavior by helping them transition from condiments in sachets to a more sustainable REMIX digital dispensing solution. This change is a massive step forward in our effort to reduce waste around the world.

Background

HEINZ REMIX debuted in at the National Restaurant Association Show in May 2023 after intense development using our agile disruptive innovation approach and entered restaurants in Q1 2024. Touchscreen enabled, HEINZ REMIX offers consumers the ability to customize their personal sauce from 200+ possibilities, dramatically transforming how people consume sauces in restaurants. Its design addressed challenges such as pumping highly viscous sauces, solved with a peristaltic pump design. As well, HEINZ REMIX is designed to prevent cross-contamination when mixing sauces, by using vortex technology to mix them in a sustainable cup to achieve the perfect blend in seconds. A huge step forward from sachets.

HEINZ REMIX serves as a mobile R&D hub in every location and a real-time insights engine for how consumers eat. Its cloud-based consumer interface allows for real-time data collection, including consumer consumptions and mix preferences, as well as operating information for the machine itself.

Describe the idea

Consumers demand personalization and customization. 62% say the ability to personalize their order is important when visiting restaurants. Consumer interviews told us that “host foods can be boring and enhancing flavor can make it more interesting”. Dips & sauces are the tool that they use to elevate their meals. 59% of restaurant operators say that consumers are demanding more unique sauces, and more than half of consumers are more likely to try new offerings from brands they know.

Conceived as a cloud-enabled consumer-facing machine that puts an R&D lab in each restaurant, HEINZ REMIX is revolutionizing sauce personalization, empowering consumers to experiment with and create personalized sauces. Leveraging real-time insights, HEINZ REMIX produces continuous feedback on consumption, trends, and consumer liking to feed our retail and foodservice innovation pipeline. This real-time data gives operators the opportunity to offer a differentiated experience and a way to drive traffic to their businesses.

What were the key dates in the development process?

• October 6-7, 2022: Brief created with an internal and external ecosystem of partners.

• February 28, 2023: Filed U.S. provisional application 63/448936 under “Condiment Mixing Apparatus, Systems, and Related Methods” including claims covering mechanical components of the dispenser and a user interface.

• May 16, 2023: 1) Filed U.S. design application 29/892261 under “Sauce Dispensing Cabinet”, 2) filed U.S. provisional application 63/466920 under “Multi-Condiment Dispensing Apparatus, Systems, and Related Methods” including claims covering mechanical components of the dispenser, and 3) filed U.S. provisional application 63/466928 under “Multi-Condiment Dispensing Apparatus, Systems, and Related Methods” including method claims covering user interface.

• May 20-23, 2023: Heinz Remix prototype debuts at the 2023 National Restaurant Association Show.

• June 2023 to February 2024: Seven different consumer tests take place to gather learnings for to optimize the refinement of the HEINZ REMIX machine.

• July 3, 2023: Optimization and upgrades to the prototype begins to prepare for commercialization readiness.

• December 5, 2023: Conducted the New User Interface optimization test at Kraft Heinz’s Glenview facility in Illinois.

• January 29, 2024: Assembly of first 50 machines for in-market launch begins.

• February 20, 2024: New User Interface is revealed at CAGNY 2024 (Consumer Analyst Group of New York) event in Boca Raton, Florida.

• February 27, 2024: Two PCT International Patent Applications filed with Application Nos. PCT/US2024/017443 and PCT/US2024/017445. The first patent application is directed toward a condiment dispenser with an agitator and/or vacuum retainer system. The second patent application is directed to the dispensing head and a multi-condiment dispenser with the dispensing head through which multiple condiments are dispensed. Each application also includes method claims that are related to the operation of the claimed devices.

• March 28, 2024: HEINZ REMIX is launched in-market at BurgerFi, 4343 N Ocean Blvd, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

Describe the innovation/technology

HEINZ REMIX enables consumers to create customizable sauce combinations made up of four core base sauces (Ketchup, Mayo, Ranch, and Barbecue) and four flavor enhancers (Jalapeno, Smokey Chipotle, Buffalo, and Mango) that can each be set to a consumer’s preferred intensity (low, medium, high). Consumers make their selections on an engaging touch-screen interface, capable of live cloud-first updates. After selecting, consumers are directed to place a cup on the machine’s cup holder. The sauces are then pumped into the cup from sauce bags using a peristaltic pump system fit with a dispensing head. Using Vortex technology, the cup starts spinning to mix the selected sauces as they are poured right in front of the consumers eyes. IoT enabled, and outfitted with mobile connectivity, the machine’s data related to the entirety of the consumer’s choices, experience, and the machine’s operations is then shared with Kraft Heinz and the foodservice operator in real-time, which can then be analyzed to inform future decision-making.

Heinz Remix debuted at the National Restaurant Show in May 2023 and entered restaurants in Q1 2024.

Describe the expectations/outcome

HEINZ REMIX contributes to a more consumer-centric foodservice industry while changing the way Kraft Heinz creates value. Beyond product innovation, REMIX redefines the category, its formats and how it interacts within the foodservice ecosystem, which helped to fuel its PR success at its reveal in the 2023 NRA show which generated 1,258 placements and 2.2B+ earned media impressions.

This new business model will allow us to penetrate unexplored whitespace in foodservice with a potential to generate an incremental +$1 billion globally, transforming how consumers and operators experience HEINZ away from home.

In market since March 2024, HEINZ REMIX already surpassed its forecast number of estimated servings by 40% within its first week. This reinforces our expectations of driving return users, incremental store traffic, restaurant loyalty, and an overall bigger business for restaurants as we scale HEINZ REMIX to over 10,000 locations in 2025 and beyond.
