For years, HEINZ lovers have shown off their irrational love for the brand by creating new and unique condiment concoctions out of their favorite HEINZ offerings. Current trends show that consumers across the globe are looking for more personalization and accessible ways to explore new flavors, especially with a desire for more nuanced, elevated, unique, and spicier options.

HEINZ has been always at the center of creating new flavors and ways for consumers to experience and experiment with their favorite HEINZ condiments. Now, the HEINZ REMIX machine changes the game for consumers and foodservice operators. HEINZ REMIX gives consumers 200+ ways to mix their favorite sauces, addressing the growing need for personalization and enabling consumers to create their own taste identities. Furthermore, HEINZ REMIX is disrupting consumer condiment consumption behavior by helping them transition from condiments in sachets to a more sustainable REMIX digital dispensing solution. This change is a massive step forward in our effort to reduce waste around the world.

With the domination of digital behaviors and an expectation of brand intimacy, personalization is not a nice to have, but a demand. People’s need to express their own identity is growing, enriching our communities with diverse points of view. At Kraft Heinz we choose to welcome everyone at our table. HEINZ REMIX will be a vehicle for self-expression through flavor creation, empowering consumers to create their own taste identity by allowing them to personalize their favorite sauces.

Consumer interviews told us that “Host foods can be boring and enhancing flavor can make it more interesting.” Dips & sauces are the tool that they use to elevate their meals. 62% of consumers say that the ability to personalize their order is important when visiting a restaurant and 59% of restaurant operators say that consumers are demanding more unique sauces. The goal of HEINZ REMIX is to enable foodservice operators to grow their businesses by meeting this growing consumer desire for flavor exploration and to provide a differentiated eating experience . While consumers can find their favorite HEINZ sauce combinations at retail, similar offerings are not available at restaurants. HEINZ REMIX makes such offerings and many more available while eating out.

Strategy & Process

HEINZ REMIX was conceived to respond to consumers’ cravings for flavor personalization and customization as well as to help foodservice operators satisfy the demand of their patrons for more unique sauces.

HEINZ REMIX allows consumers to create 200+ sauce combinations. After intense development using our agile disruptive innovation approach, HEINX REMIX debuted at the National Restaurant Association Show in May 2023. Its design addressed challenges such as pumping highly viscous sauces, solved with a peristaltic pump design. REMIX prevents cross-contamination by using vortex technology to mix sauces in a sustainable cup to achieve the perfect blend in seconds. REMIX was conceived as a cloud-based consumer interface enabled machine that allows for real-time data collection, including consumer consumption and mix preferences, as well as operating information for the machine itself. REMIX now serves as a mobile R&D hub in every location and a real-time insights engine for how consumers eat. The prototype was optimized through seven multi-regional consumer tests that yielded learnings to refine the consumer interface, as well as to improve the machine’s functioning, for a faster, lighter, and simpler to maintain solution.

Experience & Implementation

HEINZ REMIX not only delivers a transformational experience for the consumer, but redesigns how we interact with operators in the foodservice ecosystem. Launched in-market at BurgerFi in March 2024, REMIX is leveraging data consumers are generating on the machine to identify trends and build future innovation pipelines.

Since launch, HEINZ REMIX users have voiced delight with this novel in-restaurant experience and the taste it delivers. They are more engaged and enthusiastic when served and enjoy mixing their preferred sauces as they explore the multitude of sauce combinations available. HEINZ REMIX provides a multisensorial experience, building anticipation as REMIX lights up and the serving cup spins in front of consumers while mixing something unique just for them. It is this experience and the delivery of a personalized taste that will lead consumers to increasingly return to the restaurant, boosting business for restaurant operators. Since its debut in May 2023, REMIX has driven a 68% increase in referral traffic on Heinz.com, facilitating new interactions with customers, creating deeper relationships with external stakeholders, garnering a spot as one of TIME Magazine’s top inventions of 2023, and earning Kraft Heinz a spot as one of Fast Company’s most innovative companies in the world.

Business Results & Impact

HEINZ REMIX contributes to a more efficient and consumer-centric foodservice industry, changing the way we drive value. Beyond product innovation, REMIX redefines both the category, its formats and how it interacts within the foodservice ecosystem, which helped to fuel its PR success at its reveal in the 2023 NRA show which generated 1,258 placements and 2.2B+ earned media impressions.

We’re revolutionizing sauce personalization by leveraging real-time consumer data producing continuous feedback on trends and consumer liking to feed our innovation pipeline; and by enabling a leaner supply chain by providing data on sauce consumption and sauce replenishment needs. This new business model will allow us to penetrate unexplored whitespace in foodservice with a potential to generate an incremental +$1 billion globally, transforming how consumers and operators experience HEINZ away from home.

HEINZ REMIX successfully debuted in-market in Q1 2024 and looks to scale to over 10,000 locations in 2025 and beyond. Consumers seeking to personalize their taste by customizing their sauce preferences with REMIX surpassed our forecast number of servings by 40% in our first week in-market, reinforcing expectations of a higher number of return users, higher store traffic, greater restaurant loyalty, and an overall bigger business for restaurant operators.
