CampaignDescription
Ada. A product capable of being used by millions of diverse people around the world to support their health needs.
In order to be more than a clever technology the interaction with Ada had to be like visiting a good doctor - reflecting the seriousness of your medical health, empathetic to your needs, and thoroughly professional.
We therefore created a living, breathing brand and product experience that reacts, responds and visually communicates with its users. Using friendly conversations, founded in medical precision, it reassures users and helps build trust.
The unique UI has been crafted and tested with users to replicate this, while the Visual ID is Inspired by shapes from the human genome.
Using this as the foundation, we then developed a complex natural language messaging interface that modifies its behaviour based on the data it holds on the patient to help consumers open up and relate to Ada as if it was a real medical professional.
The reasoning engine and personal health record then presents complex health data in a reassuring and understandable way using probability as the main driver.
MediaStrategy
We understood that we needed to demonstrate value to people who do not inherently believe that digital diagnosis tools are useful, or whose complex cultural context doesn’t make them feel empowered.
To do that we needed to recognise the contextual drivers of usage and create a product that was credible.
Given the sensitivity and cultural nuances around personal health, everything from the way Ada looked and behaved, to the smallest of UI interactions, it had to 'feel right'.
In just 6 months, a beta version of the medical assessment application was with users in test markets: New Zealand, Ghana and South Africa. Following in-depth feedback and iteration over the next 6 months, particularly centred around user response to the messaging interface, this app is now available globally.
Outcome
Ada is available globally on IOs and Android.
Ada delivered over half a million assessments in its first 3 months, saving time, worry and even lives - with several emergency conditions being correctly diagnosed and then resolved.
Where rare diseases could typically take 7 years to diagnose, Ada has been able to support such diagnoses in minutes.
Ada is growing user numbers at 60% MoM.
And has been featured as the best medical app in both the Canadian and US App Stores.
Ada is the number one medical app in over 120 countries.
Relevancy
Ada is a mobile application and the smartest AI in healthcare. While doctors typically rely on their own experience and what is most common, our algorithm uses complex Bayesian networks to mathematically map and analyse the incredibly complex relationship between 12,000 diseases and 8,000 symptoms. The underlying technology has taken nearly a decade to develop, and a team of over 20 medical professionals have spent the last three years training this system to respond the to vast amounts of patient data inputted into the system.
Strategy
Nearly a decade in the making the complex reasoning engine that sits behind Ada was first tested against image recognition.
Once this was accurate this was then applied to a medical content base, first being mapped against the complex relationship between 2,000 rare diseases and the many more symptoms that connect to them. This content base was then expanded to encompass common symptoms and diseases.
Next, both the reasoning engine and the content base had to be delivered to patients through an intuitive messaging interface (and later voice command). This required understanding the relationship between technical medical data and the common languages that would access it.
After this came the wide variety of user data that can be inputted into the system and must modulate the health assessment such as family history, lab results, and the changing severity of symptoms that patients input over time.
Finally, we needed to ensure that Ada presented and accessed data in a way that could respond to the complex emotional and cultural nuances around health that exist worldwide (which we unearthed through quantitative tests specially developed in partnership with psychologists at UCL to uncover deep need-states as well as conscious and nonconscious
Synopsis
Lack of access. Misdiagnosis. Longer waiting times. Shorter visits with your doctor. These are all signs of a system at breaking point.
Access to health information online has never been higher. Yet, our confidence and trust in this information, never lower.
What if technology could help solve these problems?
We partnered with a Berlin-based healthtech startup who’d developed a market leading Artificial Intelligence tool to help doctors accelerate diagnosis. We transformed that technology into Ada, a groundbreaking consumer healthcare proposition that placed the ability to accurately assess your own medical symptoms alongside the ability to interact seamlessly with healthcare professionals.
