OVERVIEW

BriefExplanation

How could the life of Manuel Neuer – goalkeeper of Germany´s national football team and FC Bayern Munich– look like, if he hadn´t tried to become a professional football player? The film gives the answer.

It takes us through a day in the life of software tester Manuel Neuer, who explains in an interview style what he does in his job and life. No doubt, that he is happy with his job and with his life in general. But still, there are moments when he thinks back at his youth when he was goalkeeper in a local football team. Leading to a self-reflecting question at the end of the film: “What, if I had really tried to become a professional goalkeeper?!”. Well, you gotta try to experience what´s possible.

EntrySummary

Manuel Neuer is not only the goalkeeper of Germany’s national soccer team, he is also the goalkeeper of Germany’s most successful Bundesliga-Club „FC Bayern München“. This online film was used in a contxt of a promotion where every one of Germany’s 1st Bundesliga clubs got their own Coke zero can with their logo on it.

In his Voice Over Neuer says a lot of things that have a double meaning and use a certain wording used by soccer players, that might not come across as well in english, as they do in German. For example: „I really arrived in Munich“ what is often said after players transferred to other clubs. Or: „I can concentrate for 45 minutes, then I get tired“ which refers to halftime in soccer, but is used while we see him in a meeting at work.

ScriptInEnglish

Manuel Neuer enters a work space, wearing an outdoor jacket and a bag over his shoulder.

Neuer says: Good Morning! and his co-workers greet back to him.

In cuts we get an overview of Neuer’s day at the office. We see a few of his colleagues at their desks, Manuel Neuer taking out a folder from a closet, cleaning his keyboard, giving tasks to his team, copying files and working at his desk.

Neuer Off:

"My name is Manuel Neuer and I work as a software controller at a large software company in Munich."

"I draw up the schedule and determine the protocol."

"I enjoy being a part of my team – I like my job. I’ve been doing it for the past 3 years and I’m really happy to be here. Munich feels like home to me now."

Cut. We see Neuer on the bus to work. He eats his sandwich and looks of the window.

Neuer Off:

"I get up at 7 am and have to catch the bus at 7:30 am. So I am often in a hurry."

Cut to a meeting room at work. Someone is giving a presentation, Neuer and his colleagues sit at a meeting table and are following with interest.

Neuer Off:

"On-the-job-training is required by the Chamber of Commerce. I’m a person who can concentrate really well for about 45 minutes, but those last 15 minutes are

really hard.... I get pretty tired."

Then we cut to a bowling venue. Neuer and his buddies warm up for practice. Then we see him bowling rather badly, missing most of the pins.

Neuer Off:

"It’s nice that we found a hobby that brings us together as colleagues, one that we all enjoy. And it’s also pretty cool that we can exercise together after work. We’ve gone to some great tournaments."

A photographer takes a photo of the team surrounding Neuer with 3 trophies in front of them.

Neuer Off:

"Last year we even won the “Triple”."

We cut into a sportsbar. Neuer and his buddies watch soccer sitting at the counter.

Neuer Off:

"I watch soccer with my work buddies on the weekends. I used to be a goalkeeper. I had real potential – I had the height, the speed, the agility. I think if I really would have tried ….."

Cut into the canteen of his company. Neuer is sitting at a table, drinking from a Coke zero soda-can. Suddenly the camera zooms in and we get a view inside his head, where he sees himself as a successful goalkeeper. Playing professionally. Winning major championships.

Neuer Off:

"….I could have made it as a professional goalkeeper."

We cut back into the canteen. Neuer looks at the soda-can in close-up and we see that it is the FC Bayern München can from the „Bundesliga“ edition.

Super:

You gotta try to seize what’s possible.
