BriefExplanation
When the Motorola Droid Turbo was released last year, we crafted a 60" spot to detail it's super-fast capabilities.
James Franco stars as our hero who takes a tumble off of a high building trying to rescue his date's scarf. As he calls on the speedy attributes of the Droid to save him, his fall becomes – in contrast – a super-slow motion visual odyssey.
Execution
The opening and final scenes were shot practically with some digital retouching, but the fall itself required a whole comp team. Using a combination of green-screen stunt doubles and Franco himself- suspended on wires- the team composited over thirty effects shots in one week.
We had a senior flame artist and a CG lead on-set to supervise. They would note a challenge as having such a big crew work on shots that had to feel like one continuous sequence.
A 4K Phantom camera at 360FPS was used to play with speed ramps and back plates were shot using a descending rig which hung forty stories up form a building with an Arri Alexa mounted on a Libra head.
Our on-set team shot high res stills on a Canon 5D which were digitally matte painted to work with the architecture of the building and the path of his fall. The Nuke team projected the plates on to geometry so that the speed of the camera and depth of field could be controlled very precisely across the shots.
