Overview

Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?

At the heart of the idea is the powerful insight that our oceans produce half of the air we breathe. Like human breathing, the ocean also has a rhythm. That's why the idea of the film is essentially a craft driven audio idea. We have merged the sound and rhythm of breathing with the sound and rhythm of the ocean and made the connection between humans and the ocean an impressive experience. No piano, no music just the ocean and humans.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

How do you get people in landlocked Switzerland, who associate the sea with sunscreen and piña coladas, to understand how important a healthy ocean is for them? The film illustrates why ocean conservation directly affects us all - about 23,000 times a day.

The mainland is only habitable for us humans if the marine ecosystem is healthy. For example, it needs enough phytoplankton, which produces our oxygen through photosynthesis. Marine conservation is therefore not just about a fascinating ecosystem, but about all of us - and about our survival.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The film functions as an acoustic illusion. We see people in everyday situations, hearing them breathe. As the film progresses, the viewer understands that what sounds like breathing is actually the sound of ocean waves. By conveying the message in such an astonishing and direct way, the film ensures that it resonates deeply with everyone: “Our oceans produce half the oxygen we breathe. Help us protect them.”

Background:

Currently, most of our oceans are completely defenceless and our basis of existence is being ruthlessly exploited. After around 20 years of effort, Greenpeace succeeded in March 2023 in getting the UN to adopt an ocean treaty. The treaty protects parts of the oceans from overfishing and pollution. Thanks to donations, Greenpeace can keep up the political pressure and achieve rapid ratification of the treaty. The campaign aims to encourage people in Switzerland to support Greenpeace in its endeavors.

Tell the jury about the sound design.

We weren't sure at first whether it would work at all. It was quite a bit of fiddling around. By sampling and pitching different wave sounds, we finally found a way to realize the idea.
