OVERVIEW

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

“Calls” is a groundbreaking, immersive television experience on Apple TV+ based on the buzzy French series of the same name, masterfully using audio and minimal abstract visuals to tell nine bone-chilling, short-form stories. Each episode follows a darkly dramatic mystery that unfolds through a series of seemingly average, unconnected phone conversations that quickly become surreal as the characters lives are thrown into growing disarray. Featuring A-list talent, “Calls” proves that the real terror lies in one’s interpretation of what they cannot see on the screen and the unsettling places one’s imagination can take them. The “Listen” trailer guides the audience through a world of rich sound effects, evolving visuals and audio interwoven from each episode, giving the viewers just a taste of the emotional rollercoaster they can expect from the series.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

With a short format and an ensemble cast that are only heard in audio, we wanted to make sure this spine-tingling series was not mistaken for a podcast. Filmmaker Fede Ávarez carefully crafted the series with dynamic graphic images and text playing out on screen and a rich audio bed including an A-list cast voicing the characters. We strove to have the “Listen” trailer reveal those more technical and pedigree aspects while simultaneously weaving a narrative that was intriguing but void of spoilers.
