OVERVIEW

Background

Colombia has more birds than any other place on earth. More than 1920 species. 73 of them are considered endemic.

To make Colombia the number 1 birding destination in the world, que produced THE BIRDERS, a long-form documentary filmed framed as a birding road-trip adventure.

Because every good road trip needs a killer mixtape we thought that we could more deeply connect the audience to the story of these birds through producing an original audio score and record based on birds songs.

Idea

To make Colombia the # 1 birding destination in the world we produced the birders, a long-form documentary filmed with a soundtrack produced by Colombian birds.

So we identified 5 iconic birds species to represent the audio story of the film. Each bird and their song was recorded while shooting the documentary and then assigned to an emerging Colombian band.

They composed and record tracks to score the documentary film, and also to create a record

The bird’s personality was matched with each band so that the song’s composition became a sub-story within the film itself.

Strategy

We thought that perhaps the typical production model for a natural history film (narrator mixed with a classical music soundtrack) wouldn’t be authentic to the birding culture in Colombia. So we found inspiration from the surfing films of 1960s America and decided to frame The Birders as a road-trip themed adventure. Because every good road trip needs a killer mixtape we thought that we could more deeply connect the audience to the story of these birds through producing an original audio score and record based on birds songs.

Execution

The documentary was produced in the northern part of the country because of its amazing bird diversity. For example, on the Santa Marta Mountain, which overlooks the Caribbean sea, there are over 20 endemic species--meaning they only exist on a thin strip of land on the side of that mountain.

We picked our leading character, Diego Calderon, because he is considered to be the rockstar of guides in Colombia and is a perfect example of the profession’s youthful culture. In his free time, he explores Colombia and Latin America from the seat of his BMW enduro moto with a pair of binoculars strung over his shoulder.

The documentary was placed in the site of Colombia Travel and in YouTube.

With the soundtrack of the documentary, we also created a record in Spotify and Dezer.

Outcome

During these days, the documentary film is being distributed to a special audience (birdwatchers formo USA, Canada and United Kingdom) in social media.
