Execution
To mark the soft-cover release of Peter Godwin’s book The Fear: The Last Days Of Robert Mugabe, we created a sculptural installation piece which was placed in the concept bookstore, Skoobs. The sculpture, a portrait of Robert Mugabe’s head, was constructed from ash. As customers engaged with the piece, a sensor activated a mechanical arm within the sculpture, causing the head to slowly decompose. At the same time, participants were invited to hear extracts from the book, as read by the author. The extracts focused on the book’s central objective, which was to expose the horrific truth of the Mugabe regime following his failed elections in 2008. In revealing facts which would otherwise have remained secret, Godwin succeeds in weakening Mugabe’s stronghold. Similarly, the more the image of Robert Mugabe was scrutinized by participants, at our installation, the faster it fell apart.
