Overview

Why is this work relevant for Film?

“47” is a stop-motion animation film created to promote the opening of the first-ever US location of Café Joyeux, a global coffee shop providing meaningful employment opportunities to individuals with intellectual disabilities like Down syndrome and autism.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

Individuals with intellectual disabilities, like autism and Down syndrome, face disproportionate barriers in accessing meaningful employment opportunities. In France, individuals with intellectual disabilities are two-to-three times more affected by unemployment than the rest of the population, with only 0.5 percent having a job. In the US, over seven million people have mental or cognitive disabilities, and 80% of them are unemployed. Recognizing this glaring inequality, Café Joyeux was established with a global mission: to transform society's perception of disability by dedicating its efforts to the employment and training of people with mental and cognitive disabilities. With 18 locations across Europe, Café Joyeux has recently expanded its reach, opening its first shop in Manhattan, NY.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

The music composition for the film “47” was created in collaboration with individuals with Down syndrome. We leveraged an acoustic version of the song “Carry On” by Grammy-award-winning rock band FUN, using the lead singer Nate Ruess’ powerful vocal delivery. We re-recorded the track with talented musicians from across the Down syndrome community. Sujeet Desai, an accomplished musician born with Down syndrome, plays piano on the track and is responsible for the music arrangements while José Omar Davila, an orchestra conductor born with Down Syndrome, creates all the sound design and effects for the film.

Background:

With 19 locations in Europe, Café Joyeux was created to provide meaningful employment opportunities to individuals with intellectual disabilities and promote inclusion in the workplace. To announce the opening of their first-ever location in the US, Café Joyeux wanted to bring their mission to life by tapping into a real employee story to show that employment opportunities offered to these individuals need to be just as amazing as they are. Our objective was to ensure that every aspect of our film was made with the Down syndrome community to authentically bring the mission of Café Joyeux to life. This approach not only fosters a more accurate representation of the Down syndrome experience but also celebrates the diverse talents and perspectives within the community, ultimately creating a film that is not just a product but an expression of inclusion.

Describe the Impact:

The film contributes to a positive brand perception for Café Joyeux by associating the organization with its commitment to creating inclusive work environments and providing employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The film also raises awareness of Café Joyeux so consumers can purchase coffee that directly supports the individuals with intellectual disabilities community, and learn about and visit their global locations. Additionally, the film encourages and empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities to apply for jobs that place them front and center, fully recognizing and celebrating their full potential.
