OVERVIEW

Describe the creative idea

Leon Löwentraut translated the UN Global Goals into art. In addition to a worldwide exhibition, his 17 paintings were to be published online. The Idea: an innovative way of interaction that makes visitors part of the project. On 'Art4GlobalGoals.com' users navigate via brush strokes instead of buttons. To discover Leon's art, they have to cross out problems. For an intuitive, playful navigation, we studied hundreds of brushstrokes and recreated them digitally with a natural flow, decreasing paint and distinct rawness.

Describe the execution

We wanted the brush strokes to feel real. Therefore we studied hundreds of brush strokes to recreate them via coding. Each stroke is made up of thousands of interpolated stamps, like bristle layers, but are throttled by a 25% chance of failing, or being 'skilled' – creating a textured result to the brush. When real brushes come into contact with a surface, all bristles touch the surface and as a painter continues through the motion, the brush loses paint supply and the stroke gets smaller.

We coded a non-linear curve progression to handle the size of the brush. For a more realistic effect, we also remove with our code more and more bristle layers to thin out the brush visually.

A visual supply level in the interface indicates how much digital paint is left, like real paint on a real brush.
