Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

Silence the Rumble tells the story of a girl called Jess. A young school girl haunted by a mysterious and amorphous creature called ‘The Rumble” throughout her day. Told in the style of a children’s storybook, The Rumble follows Jess around all morning, disrupting her lessons and her ability to concentrate. As her hunger haunts her to a point of no return, a teacher explains to her that the Rumble isn’t a monster, but rather her tummy saying it needs to be fed. She then leads Jess to a Magic Breakfast Club where she’s able to enjoy a plate of Heinz Beanz and silence The Rumble once and for all.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

It’s hard not to look at an era pre-Covid with anything but rose-tinted glasses. But at the time, it felt anything but peachy. Brexit whiplash, Trump and a seemingly unending barrage of crises dominated the news. Child hunger in the UK was not on the general public’s radar. It was the country’s dark secret: millions of children were going hungry. And if the hunger wasn’t enough, the stigma surrounding it made it hard to even start the conversation.

Off the back of our campaign, Heinz started lobbying MPs to support the School Breakfast Bill (dubbed The Magic Breakfast Bill following our campaign). The public could write to their local MP through the MB website after the film & also be taken to the petition which received 1,113,646 signatures. 261 MPs voted for the policy change & the bill passed. All in the month after the film was released.

Provide the full film script in English.

Just like a children’s story, this film will be narrated and the visuals made to match the writing.

Open on our main character Jess as she approaches school.

Narrator: It was a normal morning on Summer Hill Lane, As little Jess Thompson walked to school in the rain.

She walked along with no one around,

When suddenly she heard the most terrible sound.

SFX: The Rumble

Oh no, thought Jess. The Rumble. It’s back. The scary monster that follows my tracks.

Jess got scared. She began having doubts. Everything was harder with the Rumble about.

Her first class was English, her favourite most days, But today the Rumble was having its way.

Her teacher sat reading a book to the class,

But little Jess couldn't hear the first word or last.

Next it was art, which should have been fun, But clearly the Rumble was nowhere near done.

It pushed her around and caused a big mess. And even spilt paint all over poor Jess.

And then onto Maths for the dreaded test,

Which the Rumble made sure was far from her best.

So, confused and upset Jess ran to the hall, She hid in a corner and made her herself small.

“Why does the Rumble just pick on me?” Said little Jess in a desperate plea.

When all of a sudden, a teacher appeared, And told her about the Rumble she feared.

“The Rumble’s no monster,” the kind lady said, “It’s your tummy saying it needs to be fed”.

“So come, let me show you a magical way You can always keep the rumble away”.

We watch as Jess follows her teacher. Together they

walk away from us and the Rumble disappears off screen to reveal the title.

Title: 1 in 5 children are at risk of going to school hungry

VO: Magic breakfast helps provide food for the 1 in 5 children at risk of going to school hungry.

At this point we transition to a school environment in live action. We see real life Jess in her Magic Breakfast club with a delicious plate of Heinz beanz in front of her and other children happily eating.

VO: Heinz are partnering with them to help Silence The Rumble.

We watch as she tucks into a plate of beans. A big smile appears across her face.
