Cultural / Context information for the jury

In 2021 Costa Rica celebrates 200 years of existence, so does its Declaration of Independence. This valuable document had to be restored due to its deterioration throughout the years, and after all the restoration process, it will never be shown to the public again. They could lock up our Declaration document, but not what it represents. That is why the country’s national brand, Essential Costa Rica alongside the Ministry of Culture wanted every page of our history from now on, to be written by its people.

Tell the jury about the typography.

The Declaration of Independence will never be shown to the public again due its deterioration. We decided to study the document thoroughly with experts, historians, and restorers to rescue every stroke, letter, number, symbol, and punctuation made by hand to create The Independence Type and celebrate the freedom that this document gave us 200 years ago, and now put in the hands of every Costa Rican.

Every Costa Rican could go to our website, where they could personalize their own message or download the typography to use it on their computers or mobiles to continue the celebration. Also, +600 companies joined the campaign, the President of Costa Rica made it the official typography of the Bicentenary, and it will be declared of cultural interest by the Government.

We know that words may tell the history of a country, but writing them is what makes us free.
