OVERVIEW

Why is this work relevant for Design?

Filter Caps turns a common and universal bottle cap into a powerful water filter by linking two bottles together, allowing water to be purified as it flows through the cap. Purifying and mineralizing water with just a single movement. Adaptable, accessible, affordable, and cost-effective, its universal design fits any bottle type and standard thread.

Its compact dimensions (6x4cm) and light weight (24gr) enable it to reach places other filter systems cannot. It have a unique mix of metals, minerals, and natural substances. It's environmentally responsible, since its casing is 3D printed from cornstarch-based material and can be composted after use.

Is this product available for purchase?

This product is non-profit, and we donate it to various partners, foundations, and NGOs. They, in turn, distribute it to the most vulnerable and needy communities that lack access to safe water, thereby supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Additionally, it is highly cost-effective. Thanks to its 100% biodegradable raw materials, the use of additive technology, and its practical size, this product is more than 50% cheaper than common treatments for diarrhea and 98% cheaper compared to other water filtration systems.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

Filter Caps addresses a global issue, but its implementation must consider cultural, national, and regional contexts to ensure relevance and effectiveness. In many cultures, water holds profound symbolic and spiritual significance, often representing purity, life, and renewal. Therefore, initiatives like Filter Caps resonate deeply with communities worldwide, as they provide a tangible solution to a fundamental human need while respecting cultural values associated with water.

Moreover, cultural perceptions of technology and innovation may influence the reception of Filter Caps in different regions. In some areas, embracing innovative solutions may be met with enthusiasm and seen as a sign of progress, while in others, there may be skepticism or resistance to new technologies. Understanding these cultural nuances is crucial for effectively implementing and promoting Filter Caps in diverse communities.

Additionally, the availability and accessibility of safe drinking water vary across cultures and regions due to factors such as infrastructure, geography, and socioeconomic conditions. In regions where access to clean water is limited, Filter Caps can have a transformative impact on public health, economic development, and overall well-being. However, cultural attitudes towards water management, hygiene practices, and community cooperation must be considered to ensure the successful adoption and utilization of Filter Caps.

Overall, by acknowledging and addressing cultural, national, and regional nuances, Filter Caps can effectively fulfill its mission of providing safe drinking water to vulnerable communities worldwide while respecting and aligning with local cultural values and practices.

Background

Situation: In Colombia, over 3.7 million people lack access to safe drinking water, with remote regions like La Guajira facing extreme heat and inadequate infrastructure, leading to health issues and malnutrition.

Brief: Develop a practical and innovative solution to provide clean water in Colombia, focusing on vulnerable communities like the Wayuu in La Guajira.

Objectives: To address the immediate water needs of underserved communities, promote health and well-being, and inspire broader community and stakeholders' engagement in addressing the water crisis.

Budget: 11.280 USD

Project scale and volume: Being portable, practical, and adaptable Filter Caps are designed for cost efficiency and provide safe water to remote areas. In partnership with Baylor International and the Red Cross, which support logistics and distribution, Filsa is successfully delivering these filters to Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina, with the ambition to expand globally and can ensure safe water during emergencies, such as wars or natural disasters.

Describe the creative idea

Brand Relevance: The initiative was developed in collaboration with Filsa, a scientific company dedicated to promoting development and technology for all, along with Baylor International and the Red Cross, both recognized for their global work in child care. This collaboration aims to address the challenges of clean water and sanitation, a key part of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Target Audience: The target audience includes individuals and families living in underserved communities, spanning diverse demographic backgrounds. Key stakeholders, along with organizations such as Baylor International and the Red Cross, collaborate with Filsa to develop and distribute biodegradable water filters using additive technology.

Describe the execution

Filter Caps originates from the design of a simple universal bottle cap, purifying and mineralizing water with just a single movement. Its compact dimensions of 6x4cm and light weight of 24g enable it to reach places other filter systems cannot.

Its interior comprises metals, minerals, and natural substances, all enclosed in a 100% biodegradable cornstarch casing that leaves no carbon footprint.

The type of printing is Stereolithography (SLA), which uses a photopolymerization process to solidify layers of biodegradable liquid resin sensitive to ultraviolet light, known for its high precision and high-quality finish.

By programming from STL software, we can manufacture 500 units per day, calculating weight so that there is no material waste.

Adaptable, accessible, affordable, and cost-effective, its universal design fits any bottle type and standard thread.

The scale of the initiative is impacting thousands of individuals initially in Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil, aiming to scale globally.

List the results

Filter Caps has significantly enhanced brand value by demonstrating commitment to global health and sustainability. Over 10,000 people now have access to safe water, emphasizing the initiative's direct consumer benefit through practical and economical solutions since each filter is significantly more economical than remedies for diseases like diarrhea. By recovering 300,000 liters of water and projecting to filter 1,825,000 liters annually, Filter Caps has a profound reach and cultural impact in regions in Colombia Brazil and Argentina, aiming to deliver one million filter globally in a year.

Filsa's brand perception has been positively influenced, establishing it as a leader in innovative, sustainable solutions. Filsa has gained attention from important stakeholders due to its alignment with consumer needs for development and technology solutions. This success meets the initiative's brief, with key performance indicators highlighting substantial progress in water recovery, consumption, and accessibility, setting a benchmark for future expansions and sustainability practices
