Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
In this film Amanda Gorman delivers her poem, Live United, to the entire country. We visit different people all over the country as they tune into her message. A farmer adjusts his radio as her words crackle across the airwaves. In a school gymnasium a custodian looks up inspired as her poem echoes out of the PA system. A bus station attendant moves her microphone to a speaker letting the waiting passenger hear Amanda’s words. From an ice cream truck, on a car radio, out of a portable amplifier, miraculously we hear Amana’s poem and see the inspiration that it brings to the lives of all different Americans. Finally we see Amanda. She’s in her room delivering her poem into a microphone with passion and determination. We hang on her final words as she inspires the nation.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
This film came at a moment of extreme tension. The lock down had rocked the economy, shuttered businesses, and isolated millions of Americans. The country was in the midst of the largest civil rights movement in history and it seemed like every day there was another shocking news story alarming the public. It was out of that uncertainty that this film was born, not just to direct help to the people who needed it the most, but as a reassuring voice of unity, solidarity, and strength in the face of crisis.
Provide the full film script in English.
It's hard to hope,
Hard to cope with crisis.
But while we might feel all alone,
We’ve never been more tightly tethered.
Because we'll only weather this unknown together.
So we get to work. We mend.
We don’t break, even when we bend.
Somewhere, another mom pays her bills,
Somewhere, another child eats his fill.
We are the world’s neighbors,
Making our communities brighter, greater,
Fighting for every person in every neighborhood.
We, the coming of the common good.
So dare to care, to be hope-sided.
We’re never divided, for when we live to give,
We always live united.
