It was our idea to celebrate the oldest residents of the Swiss Canton of Valais. Snow of a Century. There is something truly magical about the winter in the Swiss canton of Valais. We were asked to dramatize this uniqueness. And that's what we did: We have brought back the oldest residents' very first winter for them. As a surprise, they received an individual glass recipient that contained something really special: the same snow that fell in Valais in the very year of their birth. This snow was taken from the exact layers of the Rhone glacier. The entire undertaking as well as the highly emotional result were to be documented by a film.

Execution

A small scale production adapted to the winter in the alps, the small grotto in the Rhone glacier, the handicraft of the local glassblower and turner, and finally the meeting with the oldest residents. This required a sensitive, small local crew who helped us take the 100-year-old snow from the Rhone glacier and then deliver it to the oldest residents of the Valais.

Outcome

Widespread sharing and commenting online and lots of press and media commentaries. An excellent PR response and more traffic to the social media channels of the Valais Tourism Board.

Relevancy

We have brought back the oldest residents’ very first winter for them as an unconventional Direct Mailing. As a surprise, they received an individual handmade glass recipient that contained something really special: the same snow that fell in the Valais in the very year of their birth. This snow was taken from the exact layers of the Rhone glacier and handed over to the hundred-year-old by the CEO of the Valais Tourism Board.

Strategy

Emotion, Awareness, a brand with a heart.

We gathered information about the oldest residents of the canton of Valais and approached them through their families or homes in order to see if they were fit to receive such a surprise. We visited some over 100-year-olds and many almost 100-year-olds and documented the entire undertaking as well as the highly emotional results by a film. It was our aim to launch the winter season with this unconventional undertaking and reach the hearts and minds of people, position the Canton of Valais as a highly emotional brand and generate more traffic to all social media channels. Last but not least we wanted to increase bookings for the winter season.

Synopsis

There is something truly magical about the winter in the Swiss canton of Valais. We were asked to dramatize this uniqueness. And that’s what we did: We have brought back the oldest residents' very first winter for them. This direct mailing was to launch the last winter season and part of the wider Valais campaign. In order to make sure, that the melting of glaciers due to climate change was rightly transported, this project was closely followed by one of the main glaciologists of the country.
