OVERVIEW

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

This film reveals a story of a girl born in boy’s body. The girl starts to understand her nature, faces bullying in school, fights, and misunderstanding of her own mother.

After a prom where our heroine dared to appear in a dress, mother abandoned her. Finally, the fate pushed them together in a hospital where the mother (who is a doctor) assisted in gender confirmation surgery of her daughter.

The film is based on a true story of transgender woman from Minsk (Belarus). It sends a message to parents, calling them to support their children no matter how difficult it is in the homophobic society.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

150 million children from 13 to 15 y/o around the world become victims of physical abuse in school (according to the UNICEF study).

This issue is particularly acute for homosexual and transgender teenagers.

Thousands of LGBTQI people in Belarus face bullying and violence every year.

One of them, Mikhail Pischevsky, was killed as the result of homophobic attack. At the same time, society and government are ignorant towards LGBTQI rights.

Eurovision music contest finalist in Belarus, band Shuma, had a song telling the story of mother and daughter relations. We made it a story about transgender girl.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the direction. Do not name the director.

The music used in the video is based on Belorussian folk song about complicated relationship between mother and daughter.

The video and direction dramatically change the expected heroes and roles in the story. Instead of expected “daughter – mother” conflict director presents the issue of transgender people and their parents, discovering problems they face in school, society and own families. In the final we see transgender woman Valeria whose true story inspired us to make the film.

The composition of the video is built on the principle of inversion. At the beginning of the clip, we see the mother rejecting her child. But then the director shows how warm their relationship were in childhood.
