Why is this work relevant for Gaming?

The real value of gaming seats at the core of this idea.

The characters gamers have built, the levels they have beaten and the items they have collected across the years, were valuable for them way before Banco del Pacífico stepped in. But, recognizing the investment they have done and the price it has on an ever growing international market, allowed Banco del Pacífico to use gaming as the new force behind young Ecuadorians finance, without changing the financial tone and identity that comes with being a bank.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.

Due to the unstable economies in Latin American countries and the limited job opportunities for young people, many have turned to entrepreneurship in Ecuador. Additionally, the surge in mobile gaming titles, such as Fortnite, Free Fire, and Genshin Impact, has expanded the gaming community beyond console owners.

These trends, coupled with Banco del Pacífico's commitment to providing financial access to those in need, paved the way for Gamer Loan to become a reality.

In Spanish the campaign is called Banca Gamer (which directly translates to Gamer Banking). This is a reference to Banco del Pacífico's other products such as Banca Personas (People Banking) and Banca Empresas (Business Banking). The idea was translated to Gamer Loan at submission.

Background

Traditional banks believe that only 2 out of 10 young Ecuadorians possess assets valuable enough to meet loan qualifications. This outdated approach, coupled with banks' narrow perspective on value, impeded their economic progress.

Limited access to credit hampers young Ecuadorians, many of whom operate small businesses crucial to the national economy. Banco del Pacífico recognizes the need to update the meaning of value in order to make loans more accesible for Ecuadorian youth.

Describe the strategy & insight

The valuation of gaming accounts, whether for online sale or to showcase to others, has existed long before the Gamer Loan initiative. Banco del Pacífico acknowledged that gamers are essentially assigning value to the time and effort they invest in gaming.

Recognizing this core reality is what made special our relationship with the Ecuadorian gaming community. Gamer Loan isn't just a brand riding the "gaming trend"; we take the gaming industry as seriously as gamers do, backing our commitment with tangible financing.

Describe the creative idea

Banco del Pacífico introduces a revolutionary concept by accepting gaming accounts as legitimate collateral for loans. Understanding the worth of virtual assets stored in gaming accounts, Banco del Pacífico introduces BancaGamer.com, a platform empowering players to unlock the real-world value of their gaming assets.

Through this initiative, Banco del Pacífico created a bridge between finance and the gaming community, by allowing gamers to leverage their virtual assets to secure loans, marking a significant shift in lending practices.

Describe the craft & execution

To use any asset as collateral, we first determine its market value by assessing the price of each characteristic that increases an account's worth online. After gathering average prices from various online marketplaces (U7BUY, PlayerUp, PlayerAuctions, etc), we launched BancaGamer.com. Here, users can assess their account's value and submit it for review. A credit agent then personally confirms the market price, requests ownership proof if necessary, and approves the credit. This process usually takes 48 to 72 hours, with owners bound by a contract to repay their debt.

Describe the results

Young Ecuadorians loved the Gamer Loan initiative.

By simply launching the campaign 72% of young Ecuadorians could now afford a loan. This newfound accessibility led to an unprecedented 248% loan request increase in the under-30 audience. Being a hot topic among Ecuadorian gamers, and with $282,956 already pre-approved, Banco del Pacífico has proudly become the biggest investor of young Ecuadorians in just one month.

Young Ecuadorians optimism for their immediate future improved their perception of Banco del Pacífico and the financial system as a whole.

Tell the jury about the ambitions and challenges of production process.

Creating a price standard was a big challenge. Gaming marketplaces often differ in the valuation they make because many sites automate prices based on their sales records. To address this, we expanded the number of platforms we used to create more accurate price averages. However, since this alone wasn't enough to ensure accurate account values, we had to build a dedicated team in the bank's credit department. By constantly studying online sales, their job is solely to validate and correct submitted account prices. This approach also helped simplify our website's user experience by relying more on our own customer service capabilities.

Game selection was also a challenge. We had to measure both community size and economic worth to choose the games that were to roll-out.

Please tell us about the social behaviour and cultural insight that inspired the work.

Attaching social and economic value to gaming accounts predates the Gamer Loan initiative. In 2007, Zeuzo (username) made headlines by selling a level-70 night elf rogue World of Warcraft account for €7,000.

By tapping into this market, Banco del Pacífico just recognized what gamers have being doing all along: calculating the cost of the time and effort they have invested into their games. In Zeuzo's example, the cost of getting the very rare Twin Blades of Azzinoth.
