The Superstar film tells the pivotal story of the Adidas Superstar sneaker. The film spotlights the silhouette, with the Trefoil’s history interwoven with the way in which this iconic style, born in sport, has been embraced, reinterpreted, and adopted by culture—over and over again.

adidas Originals are pioneers in sport and culture. To mark this new chapter in the enduring legacy of the Trefoil, Adidas Originals released three films shot by three creative pioneers, along with a selection of stills arranged in triptychs.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The Superstar. Born on the basketball courts and made iconic by hip-hop, the film tells the story of how The Superstar has changed the game throughout history with its classic leather silhouette and shell toe. Run-D.M.C. make an appearance in the video.

Background:

The colour brief direction for Superstar was to create an authentic memory of the time period and to feel nostalgic and like we are actually there. Fluidity throughout the film was important to represent the culture that Adidas was integral too. Although there is a brand being represented it was important that the film showed homage to the culture.

Tell the jury about the colour grading.

It was important to replicate the authenticity to the era from the various formats it was shot on by comparing it to actual footage of the time. I was granular it was needed and amplified some more cinematic shots to paint the world we are in. I did research for each scene to reference to but being mindful always not to drift away from originality and the natural fluidity of the film which is essential so no one scene overpowers another. I applied rich deep colours but in a simplified colour palette but making sure each era had its own identity colour and tone. I added soft blacks and blooming white points for the nostalgic scenes and dry earthy tones for the 70s and rich blooming black and white, whilst the modern scenes are muted dark and rich.
