CampaignDescription
He chose to focus simply on a journey in a lift, because it is one of the only rooms where the doors open onto different places every time. It was this basic metaphor that inspired him to push the concept in to wonderful spaces.
Execution
The camera stays mostly stationary, as does Yorke, whilst many bizarre scenes appear outside the lift doors. Each scenario in the music video was planned meticulously so as to work seamlessly; each scene was built, moved into place and replaced - all in camera with no visual effects.
Outcome
Created to live on YouTube, the video went on to amass nearly 10 million views in its first few days of release and saw new and old fans discussing the myriad of references scattered throughout the film.
Relevancy
Thom Yorke travels inside a seemingly mundane elevator trying to get to what we presume is home. However, his journey is disrupted by a seemingly endless barrage of characters, strange situations and weird encounters. The in-camera wizardry demonstrates the director's eye for subtle details and clever production design with high impact storytelling, that warrants repeat viewing.
Strategy
The director's obsession with achieving visual tricks in-camera saw him and his crew build complex sets with manually operated sliding scenes. This allowed the video to be shot in just 3 sections.
Synopsis
To celebrate the historic 20th anniversary of the release of Radiohead’d OK COMPUTER, the band wanted to make videos for 3 tracks that were unreleased at the time but firm fan-favourites. “Lift” was one of those. The director was asked to collaborate with Thom Yorke on the official music video with the aim of bringing the song to life.
