Overview

Why is this work relevant for Entertainment?

feel away is a music video wrapped in a fever dream. Custom camera rigs smoothly transition from scene to scene, in stark contrast to the action taking place around slowthai as it becomes increasingly disorientating warping from a dream to a nightmare.

Background

It needed to be dark, funny, engaging and feature James Blake (without being able to travel him to the UK). As ever it needed to work with slowthai’s existing image and persona. I wanted to make something that used POV language inventively and moved between different character's perspectives seamlessly to evoke the slippery, shifting quality of a dream.

Describe the creative idea

The song addresses the ways that relationships permanently change us for better and for worse. slowthai wanted to make something that acknowledged these ideas but that avoided being overly sentimental and that had a bit of darkness and bite too. I took the image of pregnancy, a potent symbol of love and change, and gave the baby to slowthai to carry himself. From there I sought to make something absurd that operated via a flowing dream logic with ever shifting POVs and unexpected twists that spoke to love, loss & body horror.

Describe the strategy

Preplanned camera moves and a custom POV rig were used to ensure the fluidity of the video, with a plethora of practical effects, prosthetics and cake to add to the ‘grubby off-realism’.

Describe the execution

Pre-planned camera moves, custom camera rigs, practical effects and a custom designed set.
